The Novi Sad Chess Club is a club of continuous work and existence under the same name, with extensive chess activities and excellent results. The current Novi Sad Chess Club was founded on 12th of February, 1922, and it did not suffer the fate of the previous three attempts, because it has not stopped its activity until today. On the mentioned day, on the initiative of Jovan Rajković (1872-1950), Žarko Ognjanović / 1889-1957) and Boško Mešterović (1890-1960), a "session for the constitution of the club" was held. The handwritten original record, which is kept in the archives of the club, state that the gathering was held in the hall of the hotel "Carica Jelisaveta" (today the hotel "Vojvodina"), that over 40 chess fans were present, that J.Rajković was elected the first president and that rules of club (statute) was created and other decisions were made. Immediately after its founding, active chess life was started, so Novi Sad, along with Zagreb and Ljubljana, and later Belgrade, became the chess center of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.
Immediately after the foundation of the club, a tournament for the city championship was organized. First, the qualifications were played, and then, from 2nd of April to 29th of April, 1922, a two-round final tournament with the 11 best players from Novi Sad. After a great fight, Žarko Ognjanović and Aleksandar Nićifor reached the finish line together, ahead of A. Rosenberg, J. Kramer, L. Bizama, and others. Thus began a beautiful and long tradition that continues to this day. 89 championship tournaments have been played so far (2021), and over 50 names have been entered in the list of winners. Nikolaj Kulzhinski (1899-1974) won the most titles, as many as 14, followed by Anton Deže (1940-1991) with 11 titles. The greatest number of appearances were recorded by the legendary Dr. Radoslav Ilijć (1894-1980) and Krasoje Notaroš (1946), who participated in 46 consecutive championships! Source: nsk1922.rs
